Top 7 Things to do in Freetown in August 2024

Jumu'aa Mubarak from a rainy Freetown!

We have seen our share of rain pour this year and it is ONLY August - waetin dis mont geh fo bring kam? (What does August have in store for us?). Understandably so there aren't much events going on this month - with people trying to stay dry and with some away BUT there's still some things you can get up to in Freetown this rainy month... ☔

1. World Breastfeeding Week 👩🏿‍🍼

Every year, World Breastfeeding Week is commemorated during the first week of August. From August 1 - 7, campaigners highlight the importance and benefits of breastfeeding infants as well as a wider push for maternal health focusing on poverty reduction, food security and good nutrition.

World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding to infants (if you're able to) from 0 - 6 months. According to the 2021 Sierra Leone National Nutrition Survey, the exclusive breastfeeding rate stands at 52.7%. There has been improvement in timely initiation of breastfeeding (immediately, within 1 hour of birth) from 57% in 2017 to 89% in 2021, among the highest in the Africa region.

Wow, so na so Salone pikin dem lek bobi?

We learn everyday! 😃

Breast is best!

The one and ONLY

One of one

The odogwu of rice dishes herself...

Jolloooooooofffff! 🥳

Hailing from the Jolof Empire in what is now known as Senegal. Jollof Rice don waka fo West Africa, so relish in her flavors on August 22! Whether its Senegalese, Gambian, Sierra Leonean, Ghanaian or Nigerian Jollof (if you want to subject your taste buds to such torture 😒)... I implore you to celebrate World Jollof Day on August 22!

Two things to remember; make Jollof, not war

Don't let anyone treat you like fried rice, you're Jollof Rice.

Anyone who doesn't like Jollof is a witch or wizard. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I don't make the rules, go and argue with your ancestors. 😆

6. Get the Hepatitis B Vaccine 💉

The Hepatitis B vaccine is in town and it has been for a while!

Just this past Sunday on July 28, people around the globe commemorated World Hepatitis Day. This year the theme is it's time for action - test, treat and vaccinate.

Hepatitis B vaccine can prevent hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is a liver disease that can cause mild illness lasting a few weeks, or it can lead to a serious, lifelong illness. The vaccine is available at select pharmacies, clinics and hospitals across the city. Inquire, get tested and/or vaccinated.

I actually have to get mine done 😅. So if you see me at the pharmacy or hospital - say hi 👋🏾

7. Self-care 🤗

If it's one thing I'm gonna do...it's recommend self-care always. Period.

The beauty of self-care? It looks different to anyone who you ask. Whether that's staying indoors all weekend and catching up with loved ones, reading a book or two, watching your favorite comfort movie, eating your favorite food or attending my feminist retreat 🤭. Whatever you decide...ensure you center YOUR needs and wants because like what the picture says -- you can't pour from an empty cup.

Pour into YOU this month.

Happy new month and catch you later!

xoxo,

Mina Bilkis.
